Final nod for garbage plant likely this week.

The final nod for the new waste-to-energy plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram is expected this week. The civic authorities of Kochi have been pushing the files and intensely lobbying for the project, which is expected to replace the ailing plant at Brahmapuram where the refuse from the city as well as neighbouring local bodies are processed. The State Cabinet may take up the proposal at its weekly meeting thus ending the protracted procedural formalities, hoped civic authorities.

The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited has offered to spend Rs.25 crore from its Corporate Social Responsibility corpus as viability gap fund. This would be used for meeting the cost of power produced at the plant. With the support of the public sector company, the project is expected to take off without delay, said Soumini Jain, Kochi Mayor.
