Efforts on to shift proposed sewage plant.
The state level empowered committee of the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) is considering a proposal to shift the location of the proposed Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Karimbanapalam to new area.
However, there is stiff opposition from the public against the plant. They have been saying that the proposed site falls under the Kottuli wetland.
The proposal by the civic body is now before state level Empowered committee headed by Manjalam Kuzhi Ali , minister for urban affairs department.
The meeting of empowered committee held at Thiruvananthapuram discussed the proposal in detail. Many factors forced the corporation to consider the viable option of shifting the location of the plant to a new place. The first reason is the deadline of Asian Development Bank, which will end on June 30, 2014. The work was halted at many places owing to public protests.
Kottuli Wetland Protection Committee had already filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Kerala high court and an individual had recently filed a case in National Green Tribunal against the construction of plant at the site.
