Dharavi Set to Become Major Metro Interchange Hub with Second Station.

Dharavi is on the cusp of becoming a central Metro interchange hub for Mumbai, with plans for a second Metro station emerging as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). This expansion promises to significantly enhance east-west and north-south connectivity across the city, drastically cutting down commute times and easing road congestion.

Currently, Dharavi is connected to the Metro network via the under-construction Metro Line 3 (Colaba-BKC-Aarey). The new proposal involves extending Metro Line 11 (Wadala-CSMT) into Dharavi, introducing two new stations, including one at Sion. Sources indicate that Metro Line 11 will likely extend westward from Wadala to seamlessly connect with the existing Metro Line 3 station in Dharavi, creating a vital interchange point.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), already overseeing the Metro 3 project, has been tasked with constructing Metro Line 11, which will run from Wadala to Hutatma Chowk via Byculla. This ambitious project, estimated to cost ₹16,000 crore, is currently in its planning stages.

A Connectivity Boost for Dharavi

"For years, Dharavi has lacked proper connectivity. A Metro hub here means better access to jobs, colleges, and hospitals across the city," remarked Fatima Khan, a long-time Dharavi resident, highlighting the profound impact this development will have on the lives of locals.

The vision for Dharavi is to establish a "Dharavi Central Metro station", designed as a multi-level structure that will serve as the main interchange point for commuters from all directions. This central hub will connect the city's north-south and east-west corridors, revolutionizing urban mobility.

Commuters from the eastern suburbs will benefit immensely, as they will be able to switch to Metro Line 3, gaining smooth access to BKC and the airport without relying on road transport. "If this interchange comes up, I can get from Sion to BKC or the airport without changing multiple modes. It's going to save so much time," shared Ravindra Patil, an office-goer from Chunabhatti, emphasizing the potential for significant time savings.

Integrated Mobility Solutions

Beyond just Metro lines, planners are also focused on integrating feeder bus routes and infrastructure for walking and cycling to ensure improved last-mile connectivity. "It's more than just a Metro station," an official involved with the project stated. "The goal is to build a future-ready mobility hub that brings Metro, rail, buses, and non-motorised transport under one roof."

To support this comprehensive approach, feeder routes are being planned to connect local neighborhoods efficiently with both Metro and train stations, creating a truly integrated public transport system for Mumbai.
