The Delhi cabinet on Wednesday approved Metro Phase-V(A), paving the way for the construction of three new corridors covering 16 kilometres. Scheduled for completion by 2028, the expansion will add 13 new stations to the city’s metro network, including 10 underground and three elevated stops.
The Delhi government will contribute ₹2,940 crore towards the project, which is estimated to cost over ₹12,000 crore in total.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the new phase as “a decisive investment in Delhi’s future,” emphasizing that “strengthening public transport is essential to building a cleaner, more efficient and globally competitive capital.”
Officials said the expansion aims to improve connectivity across key areas of the city, ease traffic congestion, and reduce vehicular pollution. The corridors have been designed to allow seamless interchanges with existing metro lines, reducing travel time and minimizing transfers for commuters.
Key Corridors:
R K Ashram Marg to Indraprastha (9.9 km, 9 stations): The largest corridor under Phase-V(A) will connect major administrative and institutional hubs in central Delhi, including Shivaji Stadium, Central Secretariat, CCS Buildings, India Gate, War Memorial, Delhi High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam, and Indraprastha. Nearly 2 lakh commuters, including about 60,000 government employees, are expected to benefit. The corridor’s estimated cost is ₹9,570 crore, with ₹2,337 crore funded by the Delhi government. “This corridor will reduce dependence on petrol and diesel vehicles and significantly improve air quality in the heart of the capital,” the chief minister said.
Aerocity to IGI Airport Terminal 1 (2.2 km, 1 station): This corridor will provide direct metro access to the domestic terminal, reducing congestion around the airport by lowering reliance on taxis and private vehicles. Estimated cost is ₹1,420 crore, with ₹352 crore funded by Delhi government.
Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj (3.9 km, 3 stations): Designed to strengthen connectivity in south and southeast Delhi, this corridor is estimated to cost around ₹1,025 crore.
The Phase-V(A) expansion is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility in Delhi, providing faster, cleaner, and more convenient travel options for commuters while supporting the city’s long-term sustainability goals.
