Customs Port Designation for Jalna Dry Port.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has officially granted customs port status to the Jalna dry port, a pivotal decision expected to significantly invigorate trade and industry in Maharashtra's Marathwada region.
This new designation means the dry port, also known as an inland container depot (ICD), is now authorized to handle import and export operations, along with all associated customs-related processing activities. The notification, issued on Monday by Under Secretary Supriya Chandran, has been formally published in the Gazette of India.
Strategically located near the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and adjacent to major national transportation routes, the Jalna dry port was initially developed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). It is currently maintained by a Nagpur-based company and has steadily evolved into a crucial inland trade hub for the region.
While not a traditional seaport, this facility provides essential services by enabling customs clearance and storage of goods directly at its premises. This streamlines logistics as goods can now be processed and stored before being transported to and from major seaports like Mumbai Port and JNPT via efficient road and rail networks.
Looking ahead, an official confirmed that the first phase of development will see a multi-modal logistic park, valued at ₹327 crore, established at the dry port by the Nagpur-based operating company.
"This is a major boost for local businesses and the Marathwada region," stated Ghanshyam Goyal, president of the Jalna Steel Association, highlighting the positive economic impact anticipated from this development. The customs port status is poised to reduce transit times and costs for businesses in the region, making them more competitive in both domestic and international markets.
