Corporation awaits State's nod for road development.
Coimbatore Corporation has submitted a proposal to the State Government for Rs. 100 crore to develop the roads in the city.
According to sources, the Corporation engineers who went to Chennai recently finalised the proposal during a discussion with the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO), which will fund the project.
The proposal is to develop over 500 road works in all the five zones in the city. These are existing roads that needs improvement. The Corporation has proposed to take up 90 roads in the North Zone, over 180 roads in the East Zone, more than 120 roads in the South Zone, 50 roads in the Central Zone and over 90 roads in the West Zone. The length of roads works will be nearly 140 km.
After the Corporation submitted the proposal, a committee from TUFIDCO was in the city to scrutinise the proposal and inspect the roads included. And, another team scrutinised the file to vet the proposal for one last time. Now the proposal has reached the Government for clearance.
One of the roads proposed is between Palakkad Road and Puttu Vikki bridge that would serve as an alternative route to the Athupalam-Ukkadam Road and help commuters reach Selvapuram, Gandhi Park and R.S. Puram without having to pass through Athupalam and Ukkadam.
The proposal to develop the 2.20 km road would also include lining the nearby channel, the sources said.
