"Construction is officially underway for the Thiruverumbur satellite bus terminal, which is slated to become operational by 2027."
Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi recently laid the foundation stone for a satellite bus terminus at Thiruverumbur, at the old union office complex.
The terminus, to be built on one acre of land and scheduled for completion by July 2027, is planned primarily for city bus operations. However, Nehru said efforts would be made to operate mofussil buses from the facility as well.
Once completed, the terminus will be able to accommodate 10 buses at a time and will house 16 commercial outlets. Around 2,430 sq metres of cement concrete-paved area will be used for bus halting.
The new facility will replace existing bus shelters currently occupying parts of the service roads along the Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur National Highway. It is expected to cater to residents of five newly added wards in the Thiruverumbur zone and also support the transport needs of neighbouring panchayats.
Speaking at the event, Nehru said the state government has been allocating an average of ₹25,000 crore annually to the municipal administration department.
Earlier in the day, the ministers also inaugurated a new office for the Chief Education Officer on VOC Road in Cantonment. The building, which previously housed the Officers’ Club, was refurbished for the purpose.
