The second phase of the expansion and modernization of Chennai International Airport is set to be completed by March 2026, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha. He was responding to a query by Tamil Nadu MP Vaiko on the status of the project.
Phase 2 of the expansion includes the development of Terminal-3, which will increase the airport’s capacity to 35 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The project will also introduce enhanced passenger facilities, such as additional check-in and immigration counters, Automatic Tray Return Systems at security checks, and more baggage belts.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is overseeing the airport’s expansion and modernization in two phases at a total cost of ₹2,467 crore. Under Phase 1, a new Integrated Terminal Building was constructed, boosting passenger handling capacity from 23 MPPA to 30 MPPA. The terminal has been operational since July 2023, providing full access to upgraded passenger amenities.
