BrightNight announced on Tuesday the commissioning of the first phase of Optima Maharashtra, its inaugural 115 MW hybrid renewable power project in India. This marks one of the first co-located wind-solar projects in the state and represents BrightNight’s first energy delivery into the Indian power grid, further advancing its global decarbonization mission.
Located in Dharashiv, southern Maharashtra, and covering about 14,000 acres, Optima Maharashtra integrates cutting-edge wind and solar technologies, powered by BrightNight’s AI-enabled PowerAlpha platform. This platform optimizes power output while minimizing environmental impact.
Martin Hermann, CEO of BrightNight, emphasized India’s significant energy demand and favorable policy environment, noting, “Optima Maharashtra will be pivotal in advancing the state’s clean energy goals and supporting India’s broader Net Zero mission.”
The project will contribute to Maharashtra’s aim of sourcing 40% of its energy from renewables by 2030. Optima Maharashtra is expected to generate enough dispatchable clean energy to power approximately 230,000 homes annually, while preventing about 225,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Looking ahead, BrightNight is preparing to break ground on two large-scale projects in Rajasthan that will incorporate a mix of wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems. These projects are designed to supply peak power to off-takers connected to the national grid.
In addition to its ongoing work in India, BrightNight is developing multiple hybrid projects across other states including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Rajasthan. India is now BrightNight’s second major global market after the US.
In 2023, ACEN Corporation, a subsidiary of the Ayala Group, committed $250 million to BrightNight India to support the development of its gigawatt-scale renewable power portfolio.
