Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Inaugurates Afcons-Built Bhupatipur–Punpun Road Project.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently officially inaugurated the Bhupatipur–Punpun section of National Highway-22, a crucial component of the larger Mithapur–Mahuli–Punpun road project. The newly opened stretch, which incorporates both elevated and at-grade road sections, is designed to significantly reduce travel time between Bhupatipur/Sipara, Mahuli, and Punpun from approximately one hour to just 10 minutes.
The project was expertly executed by Afcons Infrastructure. It features a 5-kilometer elevated four-lane road, a 10-kilometer at-grade four-lane road, and a 1-kilometer ramp. The road is engineered to accommodate vehicular speeds of up to 100 km/hr, promising smoother and faster transit for commuters.
Ahead of Schedule Completion Despite Challenges
Notably, Phase II of the project was completed in a swift 19 months, a full five months ahead of its scheduled 24-month period. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin, and various other officials.
The construction faced several key challenges, including the demanding task of maintaining continuous traffic movement while simultaneously erecting precast segments for the elevated sections. A total of 1,764 segments were utilized to construct 112 spans across the new section.
Other significant operational hurdles included the widening of the existing road from 7 to 17 meters, the rehabilitation of residents affected by the project, and the complexity of work execution in densely populated areas. For the Bhupatipur Up Ramp, a specialized method involving splice girders and monopole jack stressing was employed to ensure timely completion.
This infrastructure development is expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost economic activity in the region by facilitating quicker and more efficient transportation of goods and people.
