BHEL to set up 600 MW thermal unit in TN

New Delhi: Bharat Heavy Electricals said it has bagged a Rs 2,175 crore contract for setting up a 600 MW thermal power generating unit in Tamil Nadu.

The EPC contract has been placed on BHEL by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) for setting up the unit at North Chennai Thermal Power Station, a company press release said in New Delhi.

This is the second order secured by BHEL for the new rating unit of 600 MW designed to sub-critical parameters.

TNEB had earlier placed a similar contract on BHEL for setting up a 600 MW thermal power generating unit at the same station.

For the contract, the boiler and its auxiliaries will be manufactured by BHEL at its Tiruchirapalli and Ranipet works in Tamil Nadu, while the steam turbine and generator would be manufactured at its Haridwar plant.

The pumps and heat exchangers will be manufactured at its Hyderabad plant and electricals at the Bhopal unit.

State-of-the-art controls and instrumentation system would be supplied by BHEL's Electronics Division, Bangalore.

BHEL said, it had recently signed a MoU with TNEB for the formation of a joint venture for setting up a 2x800 MW supercritical thermal power plant in Tuticorin.

'The project with a total capital outlay of around Rs 8,500 crore will be the first supercritical power project in Tamil Nadu,' it said.

BHEL has technology for manufacturing of thermal set ups to 600 MW rating in the sub-critical range and has the capability to manufacture set ups to 1,000 MW rating. So far, orders for 69 numbers of 500-600 MW rating sets have been won, of which 33 have been commissioned.

'BHEL is now poised to introduce 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters,' the release added.
