BEML and IIT Madras Startup Partner to Build India's First Indigenous Hyperloop System.
In a significant step toward developing a high-speed transportation network, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and TuTr Hyperloop, a startup from IIT Madras, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build India’s first indigenously designed Hyperloop system.
Hyperloop technology involves pods moving at high speeds through sealed, near-vacuum tubes, using Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) and Linear Induction Motor (LIM) propulsion. This new partnership aims to create a faster and more efficient transport solution for both passengers and cargo.
Under the agreement, BEML, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, will serve as the principal manufacturing partner. The collaboration's immediate goal is to develop a prototype pod capable of carrying passengers and cargo at high speeds. The prototype will be powered by a propulsion system that incorporates both LIM and Maglev technologies.
Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML, emphasized that this partnership is a major leap for India’s high-speed transportation ambitions. “This aligns with the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat by supporting transport systems built with Indian engineering and manufacturing,” Roy said.
TuTr Hyperloop was previously chosen for the Ministry of Railways' "Hyperloop Development Programme" and has been working on test tracks with academic institutions. This collaboration with BEML is one of the first formal steps towards creating a commercial-scale indigenous Hyperloop system in the country.
