AERB Approves Operation of Two 700 MW PHWRs in Gujarat.

India's nuclear watchdog, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), has granted the operational license for two indigenously developed 700 Megawatt (MWe) Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat.

This significant approval follows the successful commissioning of both units. The KAPS-3 reactor achieved full power in August 2023, with the KAPS-4 unit following suit in August 2024.

"The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has concluded the Design and Commissioning Safety Reviews and issued the License for Operation of Units 3 and 4 of KAPS-3&4, the country's first 700 MWe indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs)," a statement from the regulator confirmed.

The operationalization of these two reactors marks a crucial milestone in India's nuclear energy program, bolstering its domestic capabilities in nuclear technology and contributing to the nation's energy security.
