Adani Power Plans First Nuclear Project in Madhya Pradesh.

Adani Power is evaluating the possibility of developing its first nuclear power project at Bina in Madhya Pradesh while assessing whether land at Bina and Nigrie should be used for thermal or nuclear expansion, as it positions itself for private participation in India's nuclear power sector.

Chief Executive Officer S.B. Khyalia said the two sites, which are part of Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd (JPVL), offer significant scope for future capacity additions because of their sizeable land banks.

Adani Power recently acquired a 24% stake in JPVL, which owns and operates the 500 MW Jaypee Bina Thermal Power Plant and the 1,320 MW Jaypee Nigrie Super Thermal Power Plant in Madhya Pradesh.

"At both Bina and Nigrie, a lot of land is available and we are considering whether we want to go for expansion of thermal or keep it for nuclear power. In the case of Bina, we are also exploring the possibility of developing a nuclear site. It is conducive for various requirements of a nuclear power plant," Khyalia told investors on Thursday.

The comments underscore the Adani Group's growing focus on nuclear energy following the opening of the sector to private participation. The group has incorporated a wholly owned subsidiary, Adani Atomic Energy Ltd, to pursue opportunities in the segment and has identified sites to develop 10 GW of nuclear generation capacity by 2035.The company's plans come after the enactment of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025, which allows private sector participation in nuclear power and enables the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). The government has set a target of building 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
