West Bengal Gets ₹3,500 Crore Defence Manufacturing Expansion Boost

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday virtually laid the foundation stone for five brownfield expansion projects worth nearly ₹3,500 crore in West Bengal, aimed at strengthening the state’s defence manufacturing capabilities and industrial ecosystem. The projects comprise three facilities of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and two facilities of Yantra India Ltd, focusing on expanding production and supporting infrastructure.

Speaking at the virtual ceremony from Kolkata, Singh said the projects would significantly enhance the capabilities of the two defence public sector undertakings while creating new employment opportunities across the state.

He highlighted the shift in West Bengal’s industrial landscape, noting that news of factory closures and lockouts is increasingly being replaced by investments and new project launches.

The expansion is also expected to generate substantial opportunities for ancillary industries, suppliers and MSMEs, strengthening local industrial participation and supporting the broader growth of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
