UK Partners with Andhra Pradesh to Develop Amaravati as Smart City

The United Kingdom has entered into a Government-to-Government (G2G) partnership with Andhra Pradesh to support the transformation of Amaravati into a world-class smart city and strengthen urban infrastructure across all 123 municipalities and municipal corporations in the State.

The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat between senior officials from the State’s Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department and the UK Department for Business and Trade. The agreement focuses on four key areas: infrastructure planning, sustainable urban development, technology transfer and innovation, and integrated urban mobility.

Technology and innovation form a major component of the partnership. Andhra Pradesh plans to adopt advanced tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Digital Twins and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to improve planning, construction and management of urban infrastructure. UK institutions and State agencies will also undertake knowledge-sharing and capacity-building programmes for engineers and urban planners.

The integrated mobility programme will seek to connect metro rail, city bus networks, airport links and pedestrian infrastructure into more efficient public transport systems. Data-driven traffic management solutions will also be introduced to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and emissions, and strengthen last-mile connectivity.

Although Amaravati is a key focus, the collaboration will benefit urban development across the State. Andhra Pradesh is currently implementing urban infrastructure projects worth around ₹40,000 crore, covering arterial roads, storm-water drainage, drinking water supply and solid and liquid waste management.

UK expertise and global best practices are expected to improve the quality, efficiency and long-term sustainability of these projects. The partnership will also support long-term project prioritisation, financial feasibility studies and the development of investment-ready business cases for future urban infrastructure projects.
