TVS Indeon Partners with Global R&D Firms to Manufacture Advanced Lithium-Ion Battery Cells in India.

TVS Indeon Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lucas TVS, is partnering with leading global R&D companies to manufacture next-generation lithium-ion battery cells in India, according to company Chairman and Managing Director T.K. Balaji.

Speaking at the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Chamber Day on Monday, Balaji said that TVS Indeon has chosen cutting-edge battery cell technology that has already been validated through lab-scale pilots and limited supply to Japanese companies.

Highlighting the strategic importance of localising the battery supply chain, Balaji noted that while electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to see significant growth over the next 10–15 years, the global EV ecosystem—especially for battery cells and raw materials—is currently dominated by China.

“We asked ourselves what we should do. While it’s easy to collaborate with a Chinese company and set up a plant, we decided against it. That wouldn’t solve the core issue, as we’d still be competing on the same terms,” Balaji said.

The initiative by TVS Indeon aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported battery technology and strengthen domestic capabilities in advanced energy storage solutions as the country accelerates its EV transition.
