TN plans to develop engineering industrial park in Tiruvallur district

The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled plans to establish an Engineering Industrial Park in Tiruvallur district, aimed at fostering port-based industrial activities. The proposed park, spanning 650 acres, is set to be developed in the villages of Kattur and Ebrahanpur in Ponneri Taluk, with implementation falling under the purview of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).

According to the Express of Interest (EoI) issued by TIDCO, the project envisions the development of various manufacturing units in sectors such as heavy engineering equipment, wind/thermal power equipment, auxiliaries systems, engineering components, marine equipment, and logistics/transport systems.

The chosen location for the park is strategically situated in close proximity to a port and shipyard, approximately 30 km from Chennai. This area is recognized as one of the fastest-growing economic clusters, hosting a multitude of industrial enterprises. The region boasts a diverse economic foundation supported by sectors including automobile manufacturing, hardware production, financial and software services, and health services.

Chennai and its adjoining districts collectively house 40 per cent of India's automobile industry and 45 per cent of the auto spares industry. Renowned automotive companies such as Hyundai, Renault, Robert Bosch, Nissan Motors, Ashok Leyland, Daimler, and Caterpillar have established manufacturing plants in the region.

Furthermore, Chennai plays a pivotal role in India's leather exports, contributing over 50 per cent to the nation's total, and is presently the largest electronics hardware exporter in the country.

Recognizing the significance of a robust logistics infrastructure, the EoI emphasizes the need for seamless connectivity with global trade, reducing bottlenecks, time, and costs. The sea ports in the region are well-equipped to serve as a preferred maritime gateway for both import and export cargo, catering to the demands of the trade and industry, according to the EoI.
