Tata Electronics has announced a significant collaboration with US-based chip design leader Synopsys, aimed at enhancing process technology and design capabilities at India's first fab facility in Dholera. The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on Tuesday, outlines strategic areas of cooperation to leverage Synopsys' expertise in semiconductor design and services.
Randhir Thakur, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Electronics, highlighted their ambition to lead the global electronics manufacturing sector by offering integrated solutions across the value chain. "We see Synopsys as a key partner in accelerating our journey, particularly in semiconductor design," he stated.
Under the agreement, Tata Electronics and Synopsys will collaborate on Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD) flow setup for accurate technology transfer, development of process design kits, intellectual property (IP) development including foundational and analog IP, and Design Technology Co-optimization methodologies.
Synopsys' chip design expertise will play a pivotal role in Tata's upcoming semiconductor facilities in Gujarat and Assam. Tata Electronics had previously announced plans to invest Rs 91,000 crore in establishing India's first fab in Dholera, Gujarat, and an additional Rs 27,000 crore in a greenfield facility in Jagiroad, Assam, for semiconductor chip assembly and testing.
These facilities are expected to cater to a wide range of applications including automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence, and other critical segments. The collaboration with Synopsys is viewed as essential for building a robust semiconductor ecosystem in India, encompassing process technology, design capabilities, and equipment supply.
Earlier this year, Synopsys inaugurated a semiconductor chip design center at DLF Tech Park in Noida, marking its commitment to expanding operations in India. The center, expected to employ 6,000 engineers, underscores Synopsys' significant presence and contribution to the semiconductor industry's growth in the country.
