TANGEDCO’s Open Sea Trestle Jetty at Udangudi Set for May Completion.

The construction of an 8 km-long open sea trestle jetty by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) to facilitate coal imports for the Udangudi Super Critical Thermal Power Project is expected to be completed by May 2025, according to the Tamil Nadu Highways and Minor Ports Department’s Policy Note for 2024-25.

As per the note submitted in the Assembly on Tuesday, TANGEDCO is developing this captive port in Thoothukudi district to supply coal to its 1,320 MW Udangudi Super Critical Thermal Power Plant. The coal will be transported from the port to the power plant via a closed conveyor system.

Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board is constructing floating jetties at Rameswaram, with full financial assistance from the Government of India under the Sagarmala scheme, based on a Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by IIT.

From April to December 2024, state ports handled 87.66 lakh tonnes of cargo, generating a gross revenue of approximately ₹61 crore for the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, the policy note stated.
