Tamil Nadu: Tangedco invites bids for power purchase.

Tangedco, the state-owned discom, has invited bids for short-term power purchase agreements to meet the anticipated power demand in October and the next summer.

With the peak wind season having passed and October, the month which Tangedco officials bill as a mini-summer as it sees a spike in power demand, fast approaching, the utility has been making necessary arrangements to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

The reduced supply of domestic coal due to flooding of coal mines in other states due to seasonal rain is being cited as a reason why short term power purchase is inevitable. "Without coal supply, the thermal plants cannot be run to their full potential," said an official.

The bids were opened on August 24, and the bigger who quotes the least price would be selected to sign the agreement.

Earlier this year too, Tangedco had to purchase power during summer to meet the increased demand. The maximum power consumption in the state was recorded on April 29 (388 million units). The demand peaked on the same day at 17,563 MW .

Tamil Nadu has an installed capacity of 31,905 MW including conventional and renewable energy sources. Apart from these, Tangedo has entered into long-term power purchase agreements with private power generators.
