Tamil Nadu CM Unveils ₹4,000 Crore Plan to Upgrade 10,000 km of Rural Roads

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin revealed on Monday that the state government will allocate ₹4,000 crore over the next two years to upgrade 10,000 km of rural roads as part of the Chief Minister’s Rural Roads Improvement Scheme.

In a suo motu statement delivered in the Assembly under Rule 110, Stalin emphasized the significance of enhancing rural road infrastructure, noting that Tamil Nadu currently encompasses approximately 1.38 lakh km of Village Panchayat and Panchayat Union roads.

Stalin underscored the critical role of improved rural roads in fostering rural welfare, boosting business efficiency, reducing input costs, increasing agricultural production, and overall rural development. He highlighted that quality road networks also facilitate better access to education and healthcare services, contributing to the elimination of social and economic disparities.

"Our government continues to prioritize the development of bus-accessible roads, arterial roads connecting hamlets, and roads linking villages to essential services," Stalin affirmed.

Under the ongoing scheme, the government has already completed the improvement of 10,000 km of Panchayat Union Roads and Village Panchayat Roads at a cost of ₹4,000 crore in the past two years. Additionally, a total of 8,120 km of rural roads have been fully upgraded so far.

Over the past three years, the state has constructed a cumulative 16,596 km of roads in peri-urban villages under various road development initiatives. Furthermore, plans have been approved for the construction of 425 elevated bridges and associated road lengths, totaling ₹9,324.49 crore in value.

Stalin affirmed the government's commitment to furthering these efforts, aiming to sustain and expand the scope of rural road infrastructure development across Tamil Nadu.
