Suchi Semicon to Invest $100 Million in OSAT Plant in Gujarat

Surat-based semiconductor manufacturer Suchi Semicon announced recently a $100 million investment in its new Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) plant, set to be Gujarat’s first unit dedicated to semiconductor production. The investment will be spread over the next three to five years.

The new facility, located in Surat district, will cover an initial area of 30,000 square feet and is designed to produce up to 3 million chips per day. It will feature advanced Class 10,000 and 100,000 cleanroom environments, according to company officials.

Suchi Semicon has secured approval under Gujarat's semiconductor policy and has submitted its proposal to the India Semiconductor Mission. The plant is scheduled to commence operations in November, with an initial production capacity of 200,000 chips per day.

Shetal Mehta, Co-founder of Suchi Semicon, highlighted that the primary focus will be on scaling the OSAT operations, with potential future expansion into semiconductor design based on customer needs. Mehta noted, “While we currently focus on OSAT operations, we may explore semiconductor design in the future if required.”

Regarding semiconductor fabrication, Mehta suggested that the ecosystem in India is still developing. “We will leave fabrication to the major players entering the market and concentrate on OSAT and packaging for now.”

The new facility is expected to generate up to 1,200 jobs and will emphasize advanced semiconductor assembly and testing. Suchi Semicon has partnered with Gujarat Technological University and Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat, to cultivate a skilled workforce for the sector. International professionals have been recruited to aid in training local talent.

The project will be implemented in five phases. The first phase, starting in November, will focus on producing chips for legacy devices used in consumer electronics. Subsequent phases aim to advance into power devices and cutting-edge chips.
