Reliance gets EPC contract for Sasan project

New Delhi: Anil Dhirubhai Ambani owned Reliance Infrastructure `bagged’ the Rs. 12,800-crore engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the 4,000 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Madhya Pradesh.

Reliance Infrastructure was selected after consultation with several international players to finalise the EPC contract. While most players were not willing to complete the project within the timeframe suggested by Reliance Power, the group company offered to complete the project within a year ahead of the scheduled 60 months since awarding the contract.

With this project Reliance Infrastructure’s EPC order book has gone up from Rs. 10,000 crore to Rs. 22,800 crore. This will establish Reliance Infrastructure EPC as the largest contractor in the country engaged in building over 7,000 MW of power generation capacity.

Reliance Infrastructure will complete the first unit of 6X660 MW project within 42 months and the remaining five will be commissioned with an interval of three months. The Sasan project has run into various problems including land acquisition problem and matter pertaining to forest clearance that have endlessly delayed the project work on which was to have commenced by April 1 this year.

The experience and expertise of Reliance Infrastructure in executing such large scale projects will not only benefit Reliance Power but also lead to economies of scale and help deliver within the committed construction schedules.

Reliance Infrastructure’s EPC division is at present executing three power projects at Hissar (1200 MW) and Yamuna Nagar (600 MW) in Haryana and a 1,200 MW project of Damodar Valley Cooperation.
