Pipavav Shipyard in Gujarat Set to Resume Shipbuilding in Coming Months: Vivek Merchant.

India’s largest shipbuilding yard at Pipavav in Gujarat is gearing up to resume shipbuilding operations after nearly a decade of dormancy. In an interview with businessline, Vivek Merchant, Director of Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd (formerly Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd), shared insights into the transformation underway at the facility.

The shipyard has recruited 1,200 personnel and has already repaired four vessels as part of its revival efforts. Home to the world’s second-largest dry dock—with the capacity to build and repair ships up to 400,000 Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) and an annual fabrication capacity of 1.44 lakh tonnes—the facility is now preparing to begin full-scale shipbuilding in the coming months.
