Parandur Greenfield Airport Not Preferred by TN Govt; Other Options on Table, Says Minister.

The Tamil Nadu government is unlikely to move forward with the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur due to concerns over the destruction of wetlands and is instead considering an alternative location, State Minister for Energy, Resources and Law Nirmal Kumar said recently.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat following the Governor’s address, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s opposition to the project in its current form.

“Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s first ground protest was against the greenfield airport at Parandur. We remain firm on our stand. We are not against development, but we will not destroy wetlands,” Kumar said.

The Minister indicated that environmental considerations would remain a key factor in the government’s decision-making process and suggested that a different site could be identified for the proposed airport project.

The Parandur greenfield airport proposal has faced opposition from local residents and environmental groups, who have raised concerns about its potential impact on wetlands and surrounding ecosystems.
