NKT Expands India Operations with New Competence Centre in Chennai

Denmark-based NKT, a leading supplier of cables and cable accessories for the energy sector, has expanded its footprint in India by establishing a global competence centre in Chennai. This new facility will provide technical support for tendering and project execution on NKT’s global projects while preparing for future opportunities in the region.

NKT currently conducts its commercial activities in India, focusing on power cable accessories, through its Gurugram office. Claes Westerlind, President and CEO of NKT A/S, emphasized the company’s growing presence in India, stating, “With our new office in Chennai, NKT is well-positioned to support India’s ambitious energy goals, especially as the demand for high-voltage cables in offshore wind energy is expected to rise significantly."

Since 2019, NKT has strengthened its operations in India, employing over 165 staff, primarily engineers, across offices in Gurugram, Chennai, and Mumbai. The company is focused on tapping into India's talent pool to support offshore wind energy and interconnector projects.

Westerlind also addressed the potential for cable manufacturing in India, noting that while NKT currently operates limited assembly and manufacturing for cable joints and accessories in Delhi, there are no immediate plans for large-scale cable production in the country. However, the company continues to monitor the market for future opportunities in India and across Asia.
