Nirani Sugars to Set Up ₹2,000 Crore Polylactic Acid Plant in Bagalkot.
Nirani Sugars, one of India’s largest privately-held sugar companies, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka government to set up a polylactic acid (PLA) manufacturing facility in Bagalkot. The ₹2,000 crore project will be developed over the next three to five years, creating 600–800 direct jobs in the region.
The Karnataka government has pledged to facilitate the necessary approvals, permissions, and incentives to ensure timely execution of the project.
PLA, a biodegradable and renewable polymer, is gaining prominence as a sustainable alternative for industries such as packaging, textiles, 3D printing, and medical applications. The project positions Karnataka as a key player in the bio-based plastics sector, helping address challenges like plastic waste management and resource scarcity.
“We are excited to partner with the Government of Karnataka to bring cutting-edge PLA manufacturing to Bagalkot, reinforcing the state’s position as a leader in sustainable industrial growth,” said Vishal Nirani, Director of Nirani Sugars. He emphasized that bio-based plastics are essential for reducing environmental degradation and promoting a circular economy.
Nirani Sugars currently operates nine advanced sugar units across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Bihar. The company is expanding into high-value products and by-products through forward integration, strengthening its contribution to India’s green economy.
