Navitas Solar steps into upstream solar manufacturing with major ₹1,500 crore expansion in Gujarat.

Gujarat-based solar module manufacturer Navitas Solar is planning a major expansion into solar cell production, with a proposed investment of around ₹1,500 crore to set up a 3.6 GW manufacturing facility along with a pilot wafer and ingot production line in Ankleshwar.

The project marks the company’s entry into solar cell manufacturing and is aimed at strengthening backward integration while reducing reliance on imported components. It also comes at a time when India’s solar sector is expected to face tighter localisation requirements, with policy focus gradually extending further upstream in the value chain, including wafers.

Speaking on the development, Vineet Mittal, Director – Finance & Strategy at Navitas Solar, said the new solar cell plant and pilot wafer and ingot line will be developed at the company’s Ankleshwar campus.

Of the total planned investment, about ₹1,400 crore will be allocated to the 3.6 GW solar cell manufacturing facility, while the remaining ₹100 crore will go toward establishing the pilot wafer and ingot production line.

Currently, Navitas Solar operates manufacturing facilities in Gujarat with a combined solar module capacity of 3 GW. This includes a 0.5 GW unit in Surat that has been operational for over 11 years, as well as a 2.5 GW module manufacturing plant in Ankleshwar commissioned last year. The Ankleshwar facility is presently running at a utilisation level of around 65–70%.
