Modernisation of railway stations could get a fillip.
With the Railway Ministry focusing on generating revenue through private investment in real estate development at major stations, modernisation plans of some of these stations in the city, which have largely remained on paper till now, could get a fillip, officials said.
Ahead of the Commonwealth Games, the railways had planned to develop the New Delhi railway station into a world class station at a whopping cost of over Rs. 10,000 crore. However, the grand plans could not kick off due to paucity of funds.
Apart from providing modern facilities at major stations like Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Sarai Rohilla, the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation is working on development of Anand Vihar and Bijawasan into modern stations. However, most of these projects are moving at a snail's pace.
Northern Railway officials, however, are hopeful that these projects will gather steam as the new government has been laying thrust on development of real estate owned by the railways, especially those near the station premises.
