Patna is set to get another major road link, with the Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor expected to be inaugurated by the end of this month. Construction of the Mithapur-Sipara stretch has been completed, paving the way for the opening of the four-lane corridor aimed at improving connectivity to the southern and eastern parts of the city.
The corridor has been developed in two phases. Phase I comprises an 8.86-km, four-lane elevated stretch from the Mithapur education hub area to Ramgovind Singh Mahuli Halt. The section was inaugurated earlier at a cost of ₹1,030.59 crore, with Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL) serving as the nodal agency.
Phase II covers the Mithapur-Sipara-Mahuli-Punpun stretch along the eastern side of the railway line. The 2.1-km elevated road between Mithapur and Sipara has been completed and includes a two-way rail overbridge at Sipara. Another 2.20-km elevated stretch has been built between Mahuli Halt and Punpun Laxman Jhula.
The entire Mithapur-Sipara-Mahuli-Punpun corridor spans 11.67 km and has been constructed at a cost of ₹1,467.72 crore. Near Sipara, the elevated road passes over the national highway.
Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time. The journey between Sipara and Mahuli could take around 15 minutes, while travel from Patna Junction to Punpun is expected to take about 10-15 minutes. The Patna-Gaya journey could also be reduced to around 1.5 hours from the current two hours.
The corridor is expected to improve connectivity to Jehanabad, Gaya, Aurangabad and other parts of south Bihar, while helping ease congestion on Patna's existing roads.
BSRDCL Chief General Manager Bablu Kumar said construction of the Mithapur-Sipara section had been completed. He said the secretary of the road construction department was expected to meet Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary shortly to seek a date for the inauguration.
The corridor has been designed with a speed limit of 60 kmph for cars and two-wheelers. It also incorporates several modern engineering features, including Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC), which officials said has been used for the first time in Bihar and allows spans of up to 64 metres.
Running parallel to the railway track, the elevated corridor features high guard rails, sound barriers, street lighting, expansion joints and road markings. Officials said most of the finishing work has been completed.
