Metro comes to Peenya.

After months of delay, the largest industrial area in the city, and perhaps even south India, gets a spot on the metro map.

The services on the Reach 3B extension of Namma Metro, between Nagasandra (close to the end of Tumkur Road elevated expressway) and Peenya Industrial Area Phase I, was launched on Friday. The new stations added are Peenya Industry, Jalahalli Cross, Dasarahalli, and Nagasandra.

The addition of four stations along the 3.4-km extension will now see commuters able to travel 10.5 km between Sampige Road station and Nagasandra within 25 minutes.

'The extension will come as a great help to thousands of workers, who have to travel to Peenya Industrial Area to work,' said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

During the inauguration, D.K. Suresh, MP, demanded that Peenya metro station be renamed 'Goraguntepalya metro station', after the surrounding region.

The Chief Minister responded positively to the demand.

Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the Centre was placing emphasis on developing metro networks in cities. 'The eligibility for approval has been lowered to a city of population more than 10 lakh, instead of 20 lakh,' he said.
