Mekedatu Project faces fresh opposition as TN CM Vijay seeks Centre’s rejection of DPR.
Mekedatu Project has come under renewed scrutiny after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay recently expressed surprise over the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Central Water Commission (CWC) considering Karnataka’s proposal for the project without adequately addressing Tamil Nadu’s objections.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he urged the Centre to direct the concerned authorities to reject the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by Karnataka, arguing that it contravenes the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as well as Supreme Court judgments on the matter.
He also called on the Prime Minister to advise the Karnataka government against taking up any new water-related projects without the concurrence of co-basin states, stressing that such actions should not violate apex court rulings governing inter-state river water sharing.
