Mattancherry Water Metro Terminal Scheduled to Open This October.

The Water Metro terminal in Mattancherry is poised for inauguration in the second week of October, officials confirmed to the Times of India. The terminal aims to significantly improve access to the area, particularly benefiting tourists. The final inauguration date will be decided after coordinating with the chief minister and other elected representatives.

A senior Water Metro official said, “All work related to the terminal has been completed. The inauguration is tentatively scheduled for the second week of October. This will fulfill a long-standing demand of the people in Mattancherry.”

The project, which was restarted following protests from the local business community and residents, has generated positive reactions. Arafath Nasar, convenor of the Mattancherry Water Metro Action Council, expressed satisfaction: “We are glad the terminal is becoming a reality.”

Nasar highlighted the current limited connectivity between Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. He suggested that introducing feeder buses between the two locations would benefit both tourists and locals, adding, “We plan to meet with Water Metro authorities to request this service.”

The project, which began in 2019, faced several delays. Initially scheduled for completion by March 2021, the project was delayed due to the original contractor failing to meet deadlines, resulting in contract termination and reassignment. Further setbacks occurred due to challenges in securing high tension (HT) electricity connectivity for the terminal.

With these hurdles now overcome, the Mattancherry Water Metro terminal is set to become a key transportation hub, boosting local mobility and tourism.
