Maradu water supply plant to be ready soon.

The proposed water plant at Maradu that will supply 100 million litres a day will be a New Year gift to the people of Kochi, said the Urban Development Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali.

Mr. Ali, who visited the plant recently, informed that the city’s water supply will be augmented by 25 mld. Maradu municipality, Kumbalam, Kumbalanghi, Chellam panchayats are the other beneficiaries of the project. He said that all hurdles will be overcome soon to fully commission the plant.

The project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission had been dragging since the last seven years and continues to face hurdles for the last 10 per cent work. Railway’s sanction has not yet come in for pipeline under the railway crossing at Aroor to complete the connection to Chellanam sump. The Minister said that the sanction is expected soon.

Works are going on to fill in the gaps at 12 points in the 1,108 metre pipelines for the Port Trust and the Thevara sump. The retendering process of the 100 metre pipeline at Nettoor railway crossing is in the final stages and the work on the 15 lakh litre new water tank at Maradu is also progressing. Once the electrical inspector's sanction for the 1,000 kv connection for the water treatment plant comes through, supply to Maradu and Kumbalam can be started.
