L&T Secures Major Contract for 185 MW Solar Plant with 254 MWh Battery Storage

L&T Secures Major Contract for 185 MW Solar Plant with 254 MWh Battery Storage

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced recently that it has secured a significant contract to establish a grid-connected 185 MW solar PV plant combined with a 254 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The project is estimated to cost between ₹2,500 and ₹5,000 crore.

L&T’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division won the domestic order to construct the solar plant at Kajra in Bihar's Lakhisarai district, the engineering procurement and construction (EPC) giant revealed.

The 254 MWh BESS will enable the storage of solar energy during low-demand periods and its discharge during peak demand times. Additionally, it will help stabilize generation fluctuations, regulate frequency, and support voltage. The BESS also features black start capability, which facilitates quick re-energization after an outage.

A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President & Head of Renewable Strategic Business Group at PT&D, commented, “This is a welcome addition to our Renewable EPC portfolio of 18 GWp (Gigawatt Peak) cumulative capacity, comprising solar and wind generation projects already commissioned and in progress. On the Battery Energy Storage System front, we handle more than 1.5 GWh of storage capacity. This rich experience has made us the EPC partner of choice for developers globally.”

Prabhudas Lilladher Research Analyst Amit Anwani noted that L&T’s PT&D business has secured a major order (₹2,500-5,000 crore) for the Solar + BESS project in Bihar. This order increases its year-to-date (YTD) order intake to ₹5,500-12,500 crore.

T. Madhava Das, L&T Whole-time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities), added, “Our expertise in providing renewable energy solutions covers a wide range of technologies involved in ground-mounted and floating solar generation, grid-scale and distributed energy storage systems, efficient transmission and distribution networks, and allied digital energy solutions. Our footprint in facilitating clean energy spans multiple geographies, including India, the Middle East, and the Far East, enabling our customers to develop GW-scale projects economically with safety, quality, and timely delivery.”
