Light Metro: work on flyovers from this year

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has made it clear that Light Metro project in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode will “proceed on the basis of the Detailed Project Report already prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).”

As an immediate step in the Rs.6,728-crore project, works on the flyovers at Sreekaryam, Ulloor, Pattom and Thampanoor on the NH-66 corridor would commence this year, Governor P. Sathasivam said in his address to the first session of 14{+t}{+h}Kerala Assembly.

The DMRC, which was made an interim consultant and tasked with the preparatory works of the Light Metro, had been demanding that flyovers be built at junctions and land be acquired soon to save time and avoid cost escalation. Now, the government has to approve the alignment for widening the Kazhakuttam-Kesavadasapuram stretch of the NH-66.

The Governor announced that the Technocity project in the capital will be completed on priority basis. The Sree Chitra Art Gallery on the zoo premises will get a new building. A Film City catering to the requirements of modern cinema will be created at the Chithranjali Studio complex. An institution in the memory of architect Laurie Baker will be nurtured as the Laurie Baker International School of Habitat Studies to promote his cost-effective and green technologies.
