Lenovo eyeing smartphones manufacturing unit in India.

Chinese PC, laptop and smart-phone maker Lenovo is eyeing the possibility of setting up a manufacturing unit in India. The unit will cater primarily to smart-phones. It currently has a PC-making facility in Puducherry.

According to Bhaskar Choudhuri, Director Marketing, Lenovo India, the company’s decision to set up a manufacturing unit will depend on how the Centre supports such projects. 'We are open to setting up a manufacturing facility for our products, including smartphones. We are watching the space,' he said.

The company enjoys a leadership position (amongst the top three) in the computer (PC, laptop, all-in-ones and convertible) segment.

According to Choudhuri, Lenovo India is also eyeing to be amongst the top five brands, in India, amongst smartphones by the end of this fiscal (FY 16).

With just 30 per cent penetration, there is huge scope for growth in the smart-phone segment. Currently, in India, the segment is dominated by players like Samsung, Micromax, Intex, Lava, Karbonn and Motorola.

Lenovo hopes to break into this leader board with its new array of offerings that include 'high-specification yet value-for-money' offerings.

'With the new launches and our increased portfolio we have a realist chance of coming amongst the top 5 brands by the end of this fiscal,' he told Business Line.
