KUIDFC likely to address defects in Phase I of project.

Defects in the 360-km long sewer network in the city is likely to be rectified by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) before taking up the second phase of laying a 150-km long network.

Mangaluru City Corporation authorities and KUIDFC officials met in Bengaluru on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

V. Ponnuraj, managing director, KUIDFC; J.R. Lobo, MLA, Mangaluru City South; B.A. Mohiuddin Bava, MLA, Mangaluru City North; Mohammed Nazir, commissioner, city corporation, were present, among others.

M. Shashidhar Hegde, whip in the council, who took part in the meeting, told The Hindu that it was decided that the KUIDFC should reconstruct the defunct manholes in Surathkal area and other parts.

It was decided that a survey should be conducted to assess the defects and later they should be rectified.

The meeting decided to take up the matter of land required for the second phase project with the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada and convince the people to part their land for the project.

It also decided to replace old underground drainage (UGD) network in old Mangaluru under a scheme of the Union government.

The meeting discussed other issues relating to UGD projects, he said.
