Kottayam Port Explores Vizhinjam Inland Waterway Connectivity.
The Kottayam Port and Container Terminal, recognized as India's inaugural inland container depot (ICD), is actively exploring the development of an inland waterway connection with Vizhinjam Port. This strategic move aims to significantly boost cargo transshipment, offering a more efficient route for goods.
The proposal has garnered a favorable response from the Kerala government, and initial discussions have already taken place between port authorities and the Customs Commissioner. Officials at Kottayam Port are optimistic, projecting a daily movement of at least 30 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to Vizhinjam Port once the connectivity is established.
According to KM Roopesh Babu, General Manager of Kottayam Port and Container Terminal, the ambitious plan necessitates dredging to create a viable cargo route through Thrikkunnapuzha and the Thottappally Spillway. He further highlighted the potential economic impact, citing a recent market survey that suggests a substantial increase in cargo movement—approximately 2,000 TEUs per month. This expansion would effectively address the transshipment demands of exporters in the vital Central Travancore region.
The proposed inland waterway connectivity is anticipated to streamline logistics, reduce transportation costs, and provide a significant advantage for businesses in the area looking to leverage the deep-water capabilities of Vizhinjam Port.
