Kolkata's Three New Metro Lines Face First Weekday Commuter Test.
Kolkata's three newest Metro segments are facing their first major test on Monday as they open for a full day of weekday operations. The new lines, inaugurated recently, are expected to significantly ease commuter congestion across the city.
The most anticipated of the new lines is the East-West Metro corridor, also known as the Green Line. The opening of the crucial 2.6 km section between Esplanade and Sealdah now allows for continuous travel along the entire 16.6 km route from Sector V to Howrah Maidan. This full corridor is expected to draw approximately 6 lakh daily riders, a figure comparable to the city’s primary North-South (Blue Line) Metro. The Green Line connects key destinations, including government office hubs like Mahakaran and Karunamoyee.
In an effort to accommodate the increase in passengers, the existing Blue Line will also add 22 more services starting Monday.
Commuters also now have a direct route to the airport. The new 6.7 km Yellow Line links Noapara to the Jai Hind (airport) station, providing a quick and affordable travel option. Fares are set at just ₹20 for the airport route, with connections to Dakshineswar and Kalighat available for ₹30 and ₹40 respectively.
Finally, the new Orange Line now spans 10 km, running between New Garia (Kavi Subhash station) and Metropolitan (Beleghata station). This expansion is expected to make travel along the bustling EM Bypass much more convenient for residents.
