Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) announced recently that East Horizon Pvt Limited will establish a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at the Haldia Dock Complex.
The port and the private firm signed a licence agreement for the project, which involves an investment of approximately ₹260 crore.
An FSRU is a specialised offshore vessel or terminal that receives liquefied natural gas (LNG) from carriers, stores it in liquid form, and converts it back into gas for distribution into onshore pipelines. The proposed facility will strengthen SMPK’s LNG handling capabilities while promoting cleaner energy infrastructure in eastern India.
The port did not disclose the size or technical specifications of the project but emphasized its strategic importance. The FSRU facility is expected to enable LNG import, storage, and regasification, supporting the national gas supply chain and the government’s vision of increasing natural gas share in India’s energy mix.
SMPK stated that the project will facilitate adoption of cleaner fuels, enhance energy security, and reinforce the port’s role in sustainable industrial growth in the region.
