Karimnagar to get 24x7 water supply by 2018-end.

The Telangana Government, which had taken up the ambitious Mission Bhageeratha flagship programme of providing drinking water through tap connections to each and every household in the State, went a step ahead and decided to provide 24x7 water supply to the residents of Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) by the end of 2018.

The pilot project of providing round-the-clock water supply in the MCK would be taken up with the technical support of Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and Vishwas agency of Maharashtra which had ensured 24x7 water supply in Nagpur.

Disclosing this to newsmen after holding a review meeting on providing 24x7 water supply here on Saturday, Minister for Municipal Administration and IT K. Taraka Rama Rao said that the pilot project would be taken up here as it is a small town with diameter of 23.5 km.

Preliminary estimates put the cost of project at between Rs. 130 crore and Rs. 150 crore, he said and added that there was no dearth of funds for the completion of the project in a time-bound manner. After the successful completion of the project here, the Minister said that they would implement the same in Ramagundam, Warangal, Nizamabad and Khammam municipal corporations. However, the 24x7 water supply would not be implemented in Hyderabad city initially because of large demand and vast area, the Minister maintained.

As part of the programme, the authorities will be laying new pipelines to a length of 315 km and construct overhead tanks.

Similarly, the ongoing underground drainage system would be also be stabilized for carrying more drain water and complete the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP). He also assured people of taking up road works by causing less inconvenience to the people of the town, who were facing several problems due to the ongoing underground drainage works.

He also said that they would install bulk flow meters for all tap connections to check wastage of water during the 24x7 supply. He also instructed the municipal authorities to reduce the non-revenue water (NRW) which was presently 40% by providing tap connections to all households at a cost of Rs. 1 per connection and reduce distribution losses and increase its revenues.
