Jayalalithaa inaugurates TNPL's modern pulp manufacturing unit.

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated a modern pulp manufacturing unit at Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Paper Limited (TNPL), Karur, through video conferencing from her camp office at Kodanad in the Nilgiris.

The unit was set up at a cost of Rs. 164 crore. TNPL set up the 300 tonne modern machinery to remove lead on old paper and convert it into a pulp. This will help the company save nearly 100 tonnes of pulp extracted from trees.

The chief minister also inaugurated a captive power generation unit set up at a cost of Rs. 167 crore. The unit will raise TNPL's captive power production from 81.12 MW to 103.62 MW. After utilizing the power produced for its needs, the company hopes to save 5 MW and sell it to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), said a government statement.

The chief minister inaugurated several welfare projects taken up as part of TNPL's corporate social responsibility (CSR). The company spends around 3% of its profits on CSR.

The chief minister launched a drinking water scheme for nearby villages set up under company's CSR scheme.
