Inner Ring Road to get vehicular subway.

The southern sector of the Inner Ring Road will get a new vehicular subway at the point where it intersects with Mount Madipakkam Road.

Sources in the highways department said since it was a major junction with heavy traffic, and a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) station was coming up at that point, there was a need for a subway. The subway will connect the Mount and Madipakkam sides, and facilitate hindrance-free traffic flow.

Presently, the site plan is being prepared and the work is expected to commence in about a year's time, with construction likely to take around two years. Concurrence has to be obtained from the Southern Railway for the alignment and design.

Ramesh Raghavan, a resident of Madipakkam, said the subway would be useful for motorists who are currently taking a detour at that point. 'The only thing is that the government could have constructed the subway when the road was being formed. As is the case with many other government works this construction is expected to take some time. As it is, we are not sure when the MRTS work will be completed,' he said.
