Indian Railways Approves ₹135 Crore Rail Flyover Project for Bondamunda Section.

The Ministry of Railways recently approved a ₹135 crore project to construct a 4.59-km rail flyover between Bondamunda ‘A’ Cabin and Bondamunda Link ‘B’ Cabin in South Eastern Railway, aimed at decongesting the Rourkela–Bondamunda section.

The project is designed to improve freight movement along the industrial corridor, where rail traffic is expected to rise due to the expansion of SAIL’s Barsua–Taldih–Kalta mining complex, increased production at the Rourkela Steel Plant, and the planned doubling of the high-density route, according to an official statement.

The flyover will segregate freight and passenger train operations, thereby reducing congestion at Bondamunda Yard while enhancing line capacity, operational efficiency and train reliability. Once commissioned, it is expected to enable the handling of an additional 8 million tonnes of freight annually, supporting the evacuation of minerals and industrial products.

The ministry said the project has been identified under Indian Railways’ Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor programme, and is aimed at strengthening rail infrastructure to support industrial growth, faster freight movement and improved logistics efficiency.
