Hindustan Zinc Partners with IIT Madras to Develop Advanced Zinc-Air Battery Technology.

Hindustan Zinc Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras to co-develop a 1 kWh electrically-rechargeable zinc-air battery prototype. This collaboration aims to advance zinc-based battery technology, which offers advantages in terms of resource availability, cost-effectiveness, and safety compared to lithium-ion batteries, according to a company release.

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized zinc’s growing importance in the global energy transition, calling it a sustainable and economically viable alternative to lithium for energy storage. "Our partnership with IIT Madras will drive innovation in zinc-air battery technology, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future," Misra said.

The research team at IIT Madras, led by Aravind Kumar Chandiran, Head of the Hyundai Hydrogen Innovation Hub, has already developed a rechargeable zinc-air battery prototype and holds three Indian patents related to its design. This joint effort aims to enhance energy storage solutions for sectors such as renewable energy, data centers, and telecommunications.

Zinc-air batteries, known for their durability, long-duration storage capabilities, and cost-effectiveness, are emerging as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which are significantly more expensive. With zinc being over four times less costly than lithium, this technology offers a more affordable and efficient solution for energy storage.

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer and holds a 75% share of the primary zinc market in India.
