Gujarat targets 10 million sq ft of green building by 2018.

In a bid to promote environment-friendly construction and make a greener neighbourhood, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and Gujarat Institute of Housing & Estate Developers (GIHED) have announced developing about 10 million square feet of green building footprint in the next three years.

IGBC – a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), held the 13th Edition of IGBC International Green Building Conference at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, recently, where environment experts, urban infrastructure experts and government officials, along with captains of the real estate sector, expressed the need to increase the green building footprint.

Experts estimated the market potential for green building products and technologies at $300 billion by 2025.

Prem C Jain, Chairman of IGBC, said, 'IGBC envisions the facilitation of 10 million sq ft of registered green building footprint. The Green Building Movement has achieved a significant milestone. With 3,400 projects, India is the second country in the world with the largest registered green building footprint.'

Commenting on the need of a Green city, Hari Sankaran, Vice-Chairman and MD, IL&FS, highlighted the need to focus on various aspects of green technology and in the process, address ecological issues and concerns.

“Green Cities will offer new employment opportunities and enable employees appreciate the value of finite resources,” he said.

Ahmedabad is one of the few cities that abides by a master plan. 'The city has opted for more vertical and very little horizontal space. AMC is working towards having a sustainable & efficient power and water management system, without compromising on the city’s growth. The implementation of proper planning leads to the development of a smart green city,' D Thara, Municipal Commissioner, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.
