Gateway project at riverfront set in motion.

The ‘Vijayawada-Amaravati Gateway’ project, which forced the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to hold its ambitious project of multi-storeyed administration block back in 2016, has finally picked up pace now.

First proposed in 2016, the project is aimed at offering lavish riverfront experience for the visitors of the capital region with a star hotel, convention centre, multi-level parking and other facilities.

The Amaravati Development Corporation Ltd. has recently invited proposals from infrastructure development companies for the execution of the gateway project and also held a pre-bid meeting.

According to the tender document, the project will have three major components in three locations around the VMC office.

An iconic high-rise housing a five-star business class hotel with the convention centre and service apartments will come up in 1.80 acres beside the electric substation at the Krishnaveni Ghat downstream Prakasam barrage.

It will have at least 100 rooms and costs about ₹100 crore. A landmark high rise with family entertainment centre (FEC) and integrated multilevel parking, shopping mall, multiplex, entertainment zone and others will come up in 1.5 acres where the Kanakadurga flyover lands. The project is worth about ₹35 crore.

In addition, a food court with a number of kiosks amidst the eco-park and landscaped parking area will come in 0.75 acres at a cost of ₹5 crore.

However, the three components will be interconnected via walkways and foot overbridges so that people can easily move from one facility to the other, an official said.

The project will be taken up under design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis under private public partnership mode for 33 years.

The last date for submission of proposals is November 30 and once the project is awarded work should be commenced in three months and completed in two years.

The project is opposed by the Opposition parties which alleged misuse of the VMC office.
