Gangavaram Port Awaiting Clearances for Expansion.
In a bid to reinstate confidence among investors and revive the 'Favourite industrial hub' image of Visakhapatnam, which has been battered by cyclone Hudhud, the state govt has recently cleared the Project Implementation Report for phase-II development of Gangavaram Port at a cost of Rs. 1,318.73 crore. Sources said that the expansion works will commence soon after obtaining necessary approvals including environmental clearance.
'The expansion will be taken up within 1,800 acre currently available in the harbour. No land acquisition is required in this regard,' sources said. State-of-the-art mechanised bulk material handling systems along with additional rail sidings, ancillary civil works, and additional mechanised stock yards, will be part of the expansion. Official sources in the infrastructure and investments department told Express that the director of Ports at Kakinada has recommended the state govt to approve the Project Implementation Report for the 2nd phase of development.
